Reporters Without Borders
“The Warning” transformed a familiar cinema ritual into a powerful statement about press freedom. In the lead-up to Germany’s early elections following the loss of confidence in Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the campaign repurposed common cinema warning signs like “No photos” and “No talking.” Screened in more than 250 theaters before the main film, these messages took on a new meaning when followed by the line: “What applies in the cinema must never apply to the press.” By reframing an ordinary pre-movie moment, the campaign prompted audiences to reflect on the growing threats to journalism and the importance of protecting press freedom in a democracy.
